Course History

Settlers Bay Golf Course is an 18-hole daily fee facility located within a 2000 acre residential community in the heart of Alaska’s Iditarod country. The first 9 holes were built and open for play in 1977. Originally designed as a par 37 with quick coupler irrigation, Settlers Bay was the second golf course constructed in the Matanuska Susitna Valley and the valley’s oldest course still in operation today. The original 9 is home to what many considered the toughest golf hole in Alaska, number 18, Nome. Our timber framed clubhouse was constructed in 1984. In 1996 construction of nine additional holes was completed and opened, featuring the 2nd longest par 5 in Alaska, number 7 Nikolai, and three par 3’s, moving the course to a par 72. The design of the new 9 included the preservation of wetlands and the creation of an artificial beaver dam on number 3, Skwentna.

All the holes are named for stops along the Iditarod National Historic Trail. Number 1, Kink, is appropriately named for our location and start of the Iditarod, and 18, Nome, the finish line of the 1000 mile "Last Great Race" across the Alaskan Wilderness.

Course improvements have been ongoing, the irrigation was upgraded on the original 9 to an automated system allowing for further improvement in putting green quality starting in 2001. Trillium Corporation sold the property in 2002 to the current ownership group, Settles Bay Golf Course, LLC. Upon the sale the 9’s were switched to allow Alaska’s toughest hole, Nome, the opportunity to decide many games. During the switching of the 9’s number 16, Koyuk, was shortened to a par 3 to bring the front 9 to a par 36 and a par 71 overall. Since 2002 the LLC has put more than 1.3 million dollars into course improvements and renovations. The clubhouse kitchen received a facelift, and two new practice putting greens were constructed in 2003 to help accommodate the increased play. A new fleet of golf carts were added Spring of 2021.

Amos Stephens, GCSAA Class A Superintendent, was promoted to Superintendent prior to the start of the 2005 season and the beginning of converting all the greens to a blend of A4, G6, Crystal Blue Links Creeping Bentgrass was begun. In 2007 a complete bunker renovation was started and all the bunkers on the course were rebuilt, shaped, lined and replaced with new sand. During the 2014 season a tee box renovation was initiated with new tees added and existing tees expanded to provide a more enjoyable experience for all golfers regardless of skill level. The new tees allowed the option for the course yardage to be reduced an additional 900+ yards to help put smiles on faces and ultimately bring more enjoyment to the game.

The improvements in infrastructure and ultimately the course conditions year after year are a direct reflection of our continued commitment to “Enhance Your Experience as a Golfer.” No matter your skill level on the course, conditions are maintained with everyone’s enjoyment in mind.

Settlers Bay Golf Course has hosted many USGA Sanctioned Local Alaskan Qualifiers over the years. The 2006, 2008, 2012-15 US Open. The 2002, 2006, 2013, and 2015 US Mid Amature. The 2006 & 2008 US Women's Amature Public Links. The Amature Public Links 2000, 2004, and 2007. We look forward to sharing our masterpiece of Alaska golf with you.

Testimonials

  • Congrats! I have played the eight 18 hole courses in Alaska and, I believe, Settlers Bay set the standard. Decent layout. Beautiful scenery consistent conditions and, most importantly, the best greens.

As someone who has played over 1500 courses and even written a book about golf, my opinion may not be worth much…..

    - Colin from Virginia

  • Great job Becky and Amos, to you, and John and your staff.
The course held up well given some tough weather.
I filled in my divots. Might have had a few there….. It was my first time playing in the club championship – don’t really play in tournaments much, generally just play with my buddies on the weekend.
Next year I will practice before hand.

Maybe. Anyway, well done. You guys did good.

    - Kevin from Anchorage

  • I just wanted to say thanks again for all the effort you folks did to make our golf outing another great event. Everyone had a great time and we were able to raise money for a good cause. We look forward to returning again next year. Please let the crew know that we appreciate their help.

  • Settler’s Bay Golf Course is our annual host for the Odd Man Rush Brewing Invitational Golf Tournament. Our grass roots event has grown from 20 golfers to 120 in four short years. Much of this is attributed to the professionalism and execution of an experienced staff passionate about the sport of golf and their first class facility. The golf course speaks for itself. It’s always in premier shape for our early season tournament. No other Alaskan course stands up to it. However, General Manager Amos Stephens, Event Coordinator Vicky Howe the entire staff at Settler’s Bay are what makes our tournament run seamlessly which leads to a great day of golf and fun for all our participants. The Odd Man Rush Brewing Invitational looks forward to many years of tournament golf to come at Settler’s Bay!

    - Steve from Anchorage

  • I want to say what a pleasure it’s been having our annual customer appreciation golf tournaments at Settlers Bay the last 9 years. Our tournaments are always full (read that as challenging to get all those players moving in the same direction.) The staff at Settlers Bay is always professional and efficient. They do a wonderful job getting the tourney started on time, and keeping folks moving along throughout the day. The golf carts and rental clubs are always ready to go, and in good condition. The food is top quality and the service never disappoints at lunch time. The selection on the beverage carts is great, lots of really great beers, energy drinks and sodas. And last but certainly not least, Settlers Bay is the absolute best golf course in Alaska. The green are always in great shape, the fairways are beautiful, and the surrounding country is gorgeous. This year, as always, Vicky and Amos did a great job taking care of us and ensuring that all of our players had a great day.

    - Craig from Anchorage

  • I wanted to reach out and thank you very much for your hospitality you extended to me during my practice rounds; I greatly appreciate it. Even though I left my golf game in Seattle for the week, my wife and I had a great time in Wasilla and enjoyed your beautiful course. You have a great team there, and I’m looking forward to visiting and playing again sometime in the future. Thanks again and let me know if I can ever return the favor.

    - Jake from Washington

  • Earlier today I was at your restaurant for lunch. I was excited to meet up with some friends and try out your food. I am physically disabled and upon first looks was sad to see all the stairs but one of my friends asked your staff about Handicap accessibility. We were told we could go around back and although we had difficulty accessing the area due to some people in golf carts we eventually were able to get into the restaurant. When I got inside I talked to the staff and they were so kind and apologetic! They informed me when it was time to leave to let them know and they will bring a golf cart up for me to use to get to my vehicle. They gave me options for how to easily access restaurant if I chose to come back. The waitress that did all this was super kind and respectful! The food was delicious and afterwards when it was time for me to leave the waitress was quick to get a golf cart for me so I could safely get back to my vehicle. I really appreciate your waitresses willingness to go above and beyond to make sure I could enjoy my lunch with my friends at your restaurant! So thank you. 💜

  • Let’s just start with who the hell knew. The best dinning experience I’ve had in Alaska was tonight at the Albatross restaurant.

An evening at the Albatross, end of season dinner.

Was just looking for something to do with my wife. We have eaten in all the different restaurants in a 400 mile driving radius. Had some great food great atmosphere.

Vicky Urbina, the way you and your crew presented the food layered with wines and sprits, and all the table talk made 3 hours seem like one.

(A shout out to the chef, the food was beyond amazing.)

    - Larry Stafford from Wasilla
